Palenque Archaeological area
Chiapas, Mexico - UNESCO World Heritage Site

Palenque was built by Mayas as a city state in Chiapas, southern Mexico, near the Usumacinta River, 70 miles south of Ciudad del Carmen and the Atlantic Ocean. Palenque flourished in the seventh century AC and after its decline it was absorbed into the jungle. When Spanishs discovered the site, it was already abandoned by Mayas since a long time. After excavations and restorations it is now one of the most important mid-sized archaeological site in Central America. The finest architecture, sculpture, roof comb and bas-relief carvings the Maya produced can be found in Palenque.
This photographic documentary shows the majors architectural structures in the area: the Palace, the Temple of the Inscriptions, the Temple of Sun, the Temple of the Skull and the Temples of the Cross group.
