Life, the famous photojournalism magazine, since 1936 contributed to a significant spread of images and information litterally opening a window over the world and becoming an icon for the U.S. public. During the century, the magazine went through various periods of difficulties that led the editors to stop printing three times from '73 to '78, during the trails of the Vietnam conflict contributing to create an important historical memory, from 2000 to 2004, and then rose again as an attachment to a multitude of local and national newspapers. It never reached in the latter period the objective of printing of 12 million copies and closed permanently in 2007. Today the archive is made available online From Time inc. By accessing the portal the public can see the photos in low resolution and the images are intended only for documental browsing and are reusable for editorial purposes but not commercial. The licenses, when available, are issued by the Getty Images photo in association with France Press.
Several galleries are organized by theme, such as the classic series which included amongst others the World War II section and latest news made available by the AFP. Included in the newest gallery the photos of the britain actress Natasha Richardson, victim of a fatal accident while she was skiyng. Previously, Google and Time have already published an archive of Life which collects images of the great names of photography as Robert Capa, W. Eugene Smith, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Margaret Bourke-White. Many photographs were unpublished before. The substantial difference between Life portal and the Google service lies in the availability on the latter of the images at full resolution and the license that allows personal use. In both resources the visitor can order prints through the service Qoop at a cost of $ 89.90.
