Despite the global financial crysis, Japanese gears continue issuing new digital models empowering the strong momentum the amateur market already has. A real boom, which is comparable to those years following the introduction of 35mm film. The main reason is the introduction of affordable low price digital SLR by all the best known brands. The digital season, began with the low performance compact cameras of a few years ago, sees now as protagonists the small high-tech DSLRs , which with a price below 800 euros, increasingly populate the bags of enthusiasts and tourists. If only three - four years ago a digital SLR could yet impress laymen, now it is an extra addition that requires a relative financial effort and capable to reach a large audience.
The market renews its strategies and, after a period of pure chase of performances, rearrange itself trying to differentiate products and earn the most varied categories of buyers.

In this scenario Nikon decided for this time to not introduce yet another evolution of a existing model, but to propose a new line. Hence the name that at the first glance could disorientate the usual customers of the brand. Certainly a façade for the market strategy: going to analyze the characteristics of this new reflex the only real innovation is the introduction of the swivel display panel. The rest is borrowed from similar models of the same brand. Indeed, the D5000 could be positioned midway between a D90 ( inherits advanced functions, the sensor and the ability to capture HD 1080p video) and a D60 (the sahpe of the body, although slightly larger, the absence of a top display and the presence of a single dial).
While admitting that a wide diversity of models increases the possibility of choice, we must also mention the risk of confusing the user and inducing him to think he had an obsolete model and need to renew it.
The D5000 represents a commercial response to the Canon EOS 500D announced only a couple of weeks ago. The names of the models are also similar.
Going to analyze the features we find a 12.9 megapixel sensor (same as D90) with CMOS technology with live view and ability to capture HD video in 1080 combined with a module for cleaning parasite dust. A shutter tested for 100,000 cycles. An exposition sensor composed by 420 cells. A pentamirror viewfinder (0.75xe 95% of the real scene) slightly smaller than what already seen on D60 and D40 but wider than what is available on the D50. Still a cheaper unit than very good D90 pentaprism . Borrowed by D90, we find the 11 points AF system with color tracking of the subject across the points. Definitely an advanced system for this range of cameras. The battery system is revised, but still compatible with D40 and D60. The memory cards supported are the SD and the new and more capable SDHC. There's no internal motor for focusing. This means that the reflex is not able to focus when using lenses without motor, restricting the choice to only the most recent optics.
As already mentioned the most important innovation news is the swivel display that, in combination with the live view function, allows an easier shooting in difficult conditions. The solution is unique and has a hinge on the bottom instead of sideways, creating a potential interference with the head of the tripod. The LCD is not the new hi-res unit (seen on the D90, D300, D3/x) and has a diagonal of 2,7".
The overall impression about this new camera is contrasty: high-end features coexist with economic solutions, appearing as a result of a more acute marketing strategy maybe a bit to the detriment of the overall project.
