Canon EOS 7D
The hype for the 7D is finished. Who expected for a simplified version of the EOS 5D will be disappointed.
We are facing rather a remarkable evolution of a 50D: 3 more megapixels, a multitude of new features in a more robust magnesium alloy body, with better weather sealings and slightly bulkier, thanks to a wider pentaprism. The design of the latter presents smoother and more pleasing lines.
The 7D however will not replace any other reflex of the Japanese gear, but will be the first of a new line. Most likely we will see in coming years updates named as mkII, III, etc.., as usual for the "one digit" Canon series. It seems clear the intent to undermine the Nikon D300 (now D300s) leadership, which, over time, has gained the reputation to be the best APS-C sized sensor reflex.
Remarkable enhancements:
- The new 18 megapixel CMOS sensor which, enclosed in the APS-C, will severely test noise levels at higher sensitivity (100 to ISO 6400, expandable to 12,800).
- The “Dual DIGIC 4” processors.
- The continuous shooting drive: up to 8 fps.
- The new "The Focus Colour Luminance metering system (iFCL) " try to combine autofocus, color and luminance metering over 63 zones, in conjunction with the 19 AF points.
- The viewfinder capable of displaying 100% of the scene and with a magnification ratio equal to 1X. An LCD display sized 3" and with 920k pixel. A sensor can measure ambient light and thereby adjust the brightness of the screen.
- The HD 1080p video mode both in Pal and Ntsc. A redesigned software interface that will make easier to combine custom settings and preferences.
- Virtual horizon both on screen and viewfinder. - Built-in flash with 15mm covering field (as then shorter focal lenght of the new kit zoom) and built-in Speedlite wireless transmitter integrata to control external strobes.
Considering the number of enhancements would be simplistic to define this new SLR as just an update of the 50D. Canon used to perform frequent but moderate changes for the XXD series. It seems to us then justified the choice of splitting off the two product lines.
